The Mayo Clinic also offers very good information at http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/nail-fungus/DS00084
Fingernail fungus is difficult to treat. Quite often, topical (on the skin) preparations do not work and an oral antifungal is needed.
You may of course try home remedies (petrolatum jelly, garlic, salt, scalding water {ouch}, rubbing alcohol, lemongrass oil, vinegar, etc.!) but most physicians just roll their eyes when you mention using these. I’m not recommending any of them, but you may want to do some research on your own.
